Where are my Paint Bucket and Lasso tools?
You have obviously given up to quickly! The paint
bucket tool is hidden behind the gradient tool and the
Poly lasso tool is behind the lasso tool. Click
and hold your mouse over the gradient tool and you'll
see the Paint Bucket tool pop out. Try it with
other tools too, you might find something ya like! |

What is Photoshop? Where can I get it?
Photoshop
is a graphic design program made by Adobe. Most
software retailers carry the product as well as online
retailers. The latest version of Photoshop is
called Photoshop CS, yet 6.0 and 7.0 versions should
suffice when using the tutorials on this site.
Photoshop can be expensive. My suggestions for
beginners is to buy an older version; perhaps off ebay.
If the cost is too much to swallow, my suggestion is
to find a trial version to download so that you can try
it out and see if it worth your hard earned money.
Also, don't forget your student discount for you college
goers out there.

When I make a selection, how to I deselect portions of
my selection?
Simple!
This method appliedsfor ALL selection type tools.
The secret is using a keyboard shortcut. While you
are using your lasso tool (or any other selection type
tool) simply hold down your "ALT" key do
SUBTRACT from the existing selection, or, hold down your
"SHIFT" key to ADD to the existing selection.
Pretty easy eh! If you want to do it the hard way,
you can use the menu at the top of your screen:
1.
Make Selection
2. Add to existing Selection
3. Subtract from existing Selection
4. Make Selection of similar space by creating 2
Selections. |

There
is a pretty good sized list in the "FunStuff"
section. Click on the link to the right to go
straight to the page.

What is the difference between Raster and Vector?
Well I am glad
you asked! Here is a description of what they mean:
VECTOR:
A
quantity that is specified in magnitude, direction and
sense.
MEANING: Photoshop is
NOT a vector based program (Adobe Illustrator is however). Vector
graphics can be scaled to great sizes with no distortion or
pixel-ation. Instead of using a bitmap, the computer uses
mathematical points and measurements to display the graphic.
BENEFITS: Small
file size, perfect print clarity, can be printed at any size
without picture quality loss.
DOWN SIDE: Can
usually only contain solid colors and gradients.
|
RASTER:
A
predetermined pattern of scanning lines within a display
space.
MEANING: Raster
is usually associated with pictures, or any graphic that
doesn't contain simple lines or gradients.
BENEFITS:
Unlimited creativeness. If you can see it with your eye, you
can create it in raster format.
DOWN SIDE: Large
file size for high resolution graphics. Can't enlage image
without pixleation and distortion.

When should I use a JPG as opposed to a GIF?
Well is
depends! Rather than explain the whole darn thing, just go
to the link to right and read for yourself.
Basically JPGs
are a good compression file type for images containing a lot of
color. GIFs on the other hand are good for an image (such as
a logo or text) when there is ver few colors (under 256 of them!). |
